I’ve been a recruiter for over 20 years. I have helped many professionals change jobs and leverage their careers while benefiting my clients in the hiring of talented individuals. I’ve learned many things during this time, but what I have been amazed by is whether people are open or not to changing jobs.
I’ve talked to thousands of people about opportunities on which I am working that might be of some interest to them. When I ask whether or not they are keeping their options open, I either get a “Yes” or a “No”. If they answer “Yes”, I usually ask “Why?”; and if they answer “No”, I say “Great! Then you’re someone with whom I want to speak.” They usually respond with a “Why? I’m happy where I’m at.”
It is my role to help them to revisit possible motivating factors and goals, and to help them compare. Sometimes people are so busy that they don’t take the time to see what possibilities are on the horizon.
The best thing about having a job is that you have a job! That’s great! That is the time that you can make better decisions for your future without the stress of needing a job and feeling desperate.
People make positive job changes for six main reasons: challenge, advancement, stability, recognition, income, and location.
There are other reasons, but these are the six main ones. If the opportunity isn’t better than what you have currently, stay where you are, but how would you know without gathering information from me?
If you can achieve more of the six primary motivating factors than what you have, explore the opportunity. Nothing ventured, nothing gained. If you can’t, then you have validated your current happiness. Nothing wrong with that! Be smart, and know what is out in the marketplace. Recruiters often know of positions that are not posted online.
The economy is strong, and unemployment is low. There are a lot of great opportunities out there if you keep an open mind! Remember, the best time to look for your next job is while you have one!
